Since Cubone isn't a native species to the area she thought something was odd. Claire confirmed it later that Carla belonged to a friend who went home. Katara took extra care with Carla as she understood how it felt losing a mother, and friends. Carla spent some time with Youji, and seemed to have become protective over Ariel following his disappearance from Johto. She also spent some time with Winry, and would listen to her in Katara's stead. As if that time together weren't enough reason alone there's also Katara and Winry's sister-like bond to consider and all the time they spent in the same traveling party. Unlike Jet and Arnook, Carla is willing to listen to Katara in battle still. Carla has taken the unlikely maternal role over Arnook ever since the three went to Winry's custody.
