She first met him when she and Zuko went to pick up Sokka from the ferry, and he was the friendliest bug type that she'd ever met. After her experiences with a trickster Ariados, and given that he was Sokka's Pokemon she half expected a similar attitude. It's true that he likes having fun and seems to take after his trainer, but he also regards Katara as if she were family. They didn't really have any problems getting him to listen to her. Finding his Pokeball the day Sokka was returned home was painful- it always will be -but she was glad to know where he ended up.
